Snot Bubbles! A Football Primer for Moms, Wives & Significant Others
Published in Paperback by Jersten Press (30 October, 2000)
Authors: Helma Clark, David Goodrich, and Jerrod Clark
Average review score:

A must-read for moms and football widows!
Helma Clark successfully conquers and delivers the elements of football, describing her view of the subject through the lens of a fanatical sports mom and an inveterate high-end shopper. Even if you know nothing about football, you will laugh out loud at her unique take on this previously all-male domain. A great pre-Super Bowl stocking stuffer.

REALLY HELPFUL
This book is a MUST for those of you who are (a) a mother, (b) a wife, (c) a sister, or (d) a girlfriend of a football player or fan. If you have ever been confused about some rule or infraction of the game, read this book. As a cheerleader and sister and daughter, i have found that reading this book has not only helped in my comprehension of football, but I impress many of my hard-core guy football friends with my endless knowledge of the game. I'm a hit at every Superbowl party. Though football can be very confusing for the average female spectator, reading this comprehensive book will definately help.

Hilarious and Helpful!!!
I never understood what was going on at football games until I read this book!! It uses funny analogies to explain plays and the pictures are very helpful. For anyone who wants to understand football jargon, this is the book for you!!! I actually watched the superbowl this year and understood what was going on!!!!

Su Trotsky Y El Nuestro
Published in Paperback by Pathfinder Press (October, 2002)
Authors: Jack Barnes, Mary-Alice Waters, and Steve Clark
Average review score:

Thinking With Demons: The Idea of Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe
Published in Paperback by Oxford University Press (December, 1999)
Author: Stuart Clark
Average review score:

A Comprehensive Examination of Witchcraft
When discussing the impact of women in European society, witchcraft inevitably enters the forefront of study. Many authors have discussed the crimes and punishments of witches, but Stuart Clark's Thinking With Demons: The Idea of Witchcraft in Early Modern Europe breaks away from the traditional format. Rather than focus on witchcraft itself, Clark writes about the idea of witchcraft; he concludes that the concept of witchcraft was an integral component in the general intellectual life of early modern Europe, woven into the scholarly debates about the key issues of the era. According to Clark, the emphasis was on demonology, which was a "composite subject consisting of discussions about the workings of nature, the processes of history, the maintenance of religious purity and the nature of political authority" (viii). To encompass this broad nature of demonology, Clark divides the book into five separate yet overlapping sections - Language, Science, History, Religion and Politics - each of which expresses a relatively simple argument. In 'Language,' Clark discusses the antithetical nature of rhetoric and discussion in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; this permitted the discussion of witchcraft as the natural malevolent balance to proper behavior. The section titled 'Science' argues that demonology was part of the advancement on science, rather than an obstacle or adversary to it. Magic, both good and evil, was assumed to be part of the natural world, and subject to the scientific investigations of the time. 'History' details how the people were easily convinced of the activities of the devil and his minions through the increasing emphasis on the apocalyptic vision that the world was in the Last Days. 'Religion,' which focused mainly on the writings of the clergy, essentially demonstrated that the religious powers of Europe believed that witchcraft was a sin against the Lord, and involved illicit dealings with the devil. Finally, 'Politics' presents that view that the power of the king was based upon his inability to engage in witchcraft. Essentially, since a monarch was conferred power through divine right - meaning the ruler was empowered by the Lord - he was inviolable and therefore immune to the effects of witchcraft.
Thinking with Demons continues the examination of women and their relationship to criminal behavior that was introduced in Ulinka Rublack's The Crimes of Women in Early Modern Germany. The most fascinating aspects of this book dealt with the importance of duality in early modern Europe, particularly in regards to the masquerade. Such dualism, and the perception that it was natural and important to society, is a fascinating concept to consider. Such a system of duality, in which everything is "distributed between a column of positive (or superior) terms and categories and a column of their negative (or inferior) opposites" (38) would seem to be an important tool in explaining the gender-based hierarchies that evolved in society.

Compulsory for those interested in the Occult
With "Thinking . . . ," Clark has produced one of the most important history books of the 20th century. Clark voices ground breaking views of a vastly misunderstood phenomenon - the evolution and prosecution of witchcraft in the early modern period. This book is meticulously researched and well written.

West Virginia: The Allegheny Highlands

Inspirational combination of words and photography
If you have any interest in photography, natural history or West Virginia then this book is a welcome addition to you library. Jim has a unique ability to capture in words and images the experience of actually being in the Allegheny Highlands. I know because after I read the book it inspired me to go there.

The images are very well done from an artistic perspective. The words in Jim's own hand make the book an experience to enjoy again and again.

The photography in this book is amazing!
I purchased this book as a Christmas gift for my father, sight unseen, based on the description here at amazon.com. After he opened this gift, I had a chance to see it. I could not have been more pleased. The photography is amazing. It truly depicts the beauty of West Virginia. I liked the book so much that I have now ordered a copy for myself, which will be on display in my home in Washington, D.C.

A resplendent volume.
"West Virginia: The Allegheny Highlands" is an absolutely resplendent volume. Nature photographer and biologist Jim Clark masterfully captures the colors, features, and animal life in the wildest and most remote region in the Appalachian Mountains. Clark takes us through four seasons in the Alleghenies. His 100 full-color pictures are as winningly composed as they are iridescently rendered. Clark is one of those rare photographers who can truly give you a sense of grandeur in his work. In "New River Bridge, Fayette County," he doesn't just capture the forminable span of the bridge. He includes the giant (yet tiny!) boulders in the river below, so that you can get an almost stunning sense of the reach and height of this engineering marvel. But Clark is just as adept with smaller scenes. Witness "Maple Leaves in a Stream" and the almost paint-like "Reflections, Branch of the Potomac River, Grant County." And Clark's prose is nearly as penetrating as his photographs. Of a winterstorm, he writes: "The first thing I notice about the snowstorm is how still it is. Nothing is moving; the only sound I hear is the wind whispering through the trees." Don't miss this rich and captivating work.

when the angels cried
this should definately be a movie!!! reading this book was a great experience. it only took me a week to read this book i couldn't put it down! the detail that Mr.Clark put into this book is something that most authors are afraid to do. his detail helped me see exactly how kevin was feeling and all the emotions he felt. i cried through the whole book. this book is by far the most brilliant piece of work i have ever read.

I can't go higher than 5 stars??
I got this book. After like the first page, I was sucked right in. This is like the best book I have ever read. The way that it's set up, where the chapters switch from the story Kevin's telling, to the story of Kevin, and the relationships Kevin forms throughout his life, it's just awesome. I've never read a book, and have been able to see through a characters mind, as if he was a real person. I feel like I just met a guy, and actually felt bad for him. It was just astounding. Buy this book...

the best that I have ever read.It should be a movie
I am not the type to read books. But when I got this book in my hands I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN.At first all I could say to myself was O MY ... In the middle of the book I laughted so hard I about wet my pants. At the end of the Book I cried myself tosleep..THIS BOOK SHOULD BE MADE INTO A MOVIE.It would open a lot of eyes and maybe some hearts,Then maybe something more could be done. This information in this book is just reading for some, but sadly it is reality for others.I think this book could change lives by being made into a movie. If it could change one life it would be worth it.I believe with all of my heart that when child abuse really happens that "The Angels Do Cry"..I will personally read anything that this young Author writes..I am trully hooked. This book touches my heart, mind and soul.If there is a fan club for Barry Scott Clark please count me in.This book can truly change lives and even save them.I am trully better for reading it.It has been a true honor.I'll never forget this book.

Acting Is Believing, a Basic Method

Useful for anyone, even a non actor
Life is a stage and everyone is a performer and actor. If you want to understand yourself and possibly change behavior, this book is great. I have the first edition which I paid $$$ for. I am not an actor, but we all act a part when in front of people. If we want to portray some person with certain traits or characteristics which would benefit us, you can learn from this book. It is not being someone who you are not, but bringing out some behavior which is part of you anyway, which would positively benefit you.

A Very Powerful Resource
If you need a good, step-by-step resource that outlines all of the basics you need to know to perform well, go ahead and buy this book. It is a little expensive, but it is worth it because no other book I have run across gives you such powerful basic methods to charge-up your acing skills when you are feeling a little confused about what you should/could be doing. Someone who follows the instructions in this book can literally transform from a clumsy actor to a basically skilled actor in about a week.

A Basic but Most Complete Method
This is a fabulous book for novice actors! An absolute must for the beginner. Summurised in these pages you can find the teachings of the great masters of drama (such as the well known Stanislavski. It is very clear and easy to read and understand even for the complete beginners. On top of all the good advice and techinques you get a lot of exercises to practice what you've learnt till then. It really has helped me with my acting!

After the Light: What I Discovered on the Other Side of Life That Can Change Your World
Published in Hardcover by William Morrow (June, 1995)
Author: Kimberly Clark Sharp
Average review score:

I LOVED This Book !!
This is a great book I really enjoyed it. Not only is her story of her Near-Death Experience amazing, and true, but her writing style is both humorous and serious, depending on what she's talking about. Some of it might stretch your imagination, but who knows? She is very believable, and when I wasn't in total amazement, I was laughing. Near the end, she had me laughing so hard, my husband came in the room and said, "What's so funny?". Well, I couldn't tell him, because you just have to read the book. Well written, and full of amazing surprises. What can I say, I loved it, and I hope you do to.

EXCELLENT NDE!
Kimberly Clark Sharp writes like you are her friend and she is sharing her story over a cuppa' tea. Although, extraordinary in terms of your usual reading, Ms. Sharp is believable. She has experienced incredible spiritual moments which have enhanced her life and change your thinking about what's possible. Her words teach us to be open and understanding of what we can't often put into out own words, its a feeling. Reading "After the Light" helps one focus on the spiritual and makes one know without a doubt, how "connected" we all are to one another. It shares many experiences from a spiritual standpoint and you crave knowing more! A very enjoyable book I didn't want to end!

Applying the lessons of a near death experience to real life
After reading many books on near death experiences (NDEs), I have to say I learned a lot of new things from this one.

The author's energetic, upbeat personality comes through loud and clear in a very readable, entertaining style. She discovered after her NDE at age 22, not only reserves of personal strength and knowledge of a spiritual world, but that encountering a dark side of the spiritual world can be a growing experience.

In addition, she details her post NDE ability to "see angels," as well as battling her grief following death of a loved one, and her personal experience with breast cancer.

Well worth reading for anyone interested in this sort of thing.

Truth About Sacajawea
Published in Hardcover by Grandview Publishing Company (June, 1903)
Authors: Kenne Thomasma, Agnes Vincen Talbot, and Kenneth Thomasma
Average review score:

The Truth About Sacagawea a book review by Sarah
The Truth About Sacagawea has a wonderful story to tell about Sacagawea. Kenneth Thomasma worked very hard on it. This story is adventurous and it makes you want to keep on reading on and on. You always need to believe in yourself like Sacagawea, Lewis, and Clark did when they were going through tough times. Sacagawea was very brave to go on an expedition with her young child. Sacagawea went on this expedition because she was hired as an interpreter and guide person. Lewis and Clark went up the Missisippi River and then traveled on the Snake River.

A Good Introduction
While this book is a bit short (96 pages) it is also filled with fact, as written by Lewis and Clark themselves. This is a testament to the value of Sacajawea to the expedition. A crucial part of the success of the exploration of the Louisanna Purchase.

Sacajawea proved very valuable in finding food, acting as an interpreter for the exploring party and guiding them through lands that she remembered from her younger days. She was a Shoshoni girl who was captured at age 11 and married to another tribe.

This book serves as a good introduction (it was mine) to a fascinating woman who's place in history, while assured, probably is not as esteemed as it actually should be. She is too often overlooked in the school books or her contributions minimized. I barely remember anything (other than her name) from my days of learning history in school. And I was astonished to find that William Clark was the guardian of her two children after her death (before the choice of her husband).

On oversight this is a good book for a history buff or for someone interested in Native American History. It is also easy to understand and read and would benefit children from, say, 12 and up.

The irony of the Lewis and Clark Expedition
As Lewis and Clark began their journey to the Pacific Ocean, the two captains found it necessary to find a guide in order to pass over the mountains and to communicate with the Natives. As Thomasma says, "The hiring of Charbonneau and his young Shoshoni wife would prove to be a stroke of good fortune and good judgement."(p.15) As the reader progresses through the book, he or she may discover that the good luck wasn't referring to Charbonneau. In fact, the journal entries prove just the opposite. Throughout the book, it is very interesting to find the irony of hiring Charbonneau. As it turned out, this French-Canadian Trapper was nothing but a nuisance to the party. The irony shows when Sacajawea essentially becomes the guide, when she wasn't even hired, but brought on for sympathy reasons. In this view of the Charbonneau family, Charbonneau and his wife (although they are considered one with the other) are foils of one another. This biography well describes the voyage with the young mother and her husband, and their trials and helpful guidance given along the full voyage.

Those who are into history should read this book without any hesitation. This book falls into different categories of history, including American History, Native American Heritage, etc. This very informative narrative would easily be liked by history fans, as well as other ordinary people. Personally, I have never been a fan of history, but this book was very fascinating to me. The structure of this account "allows readers to experience what the explorers wrote about Sacajawea." (P. 11) Thomasma presents summaries of journal entries, along with a description of the points made out by that entry. In between each entry is a summary of the other events between the respecting passages. This structure gives a very effective way of helping the reader understand Sacajawea's importance and value along the Lewis and Clark Expedition. I highly recommend this 92 page narrative not only for the historical aspect, but also for the great story line it gives to the reader, and for the respect developed by reading this account of Sacajawea, the young mother who set a good example for all people.
